Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is quite disappointed with how some factions of the crypto world are embracing gambling on blockchain. He says this form of change goes against the core value of Ethereum and is contrary to the general philosophy of blockchain technology.
Buterin was asked in an Ask-Me-Anything (AMA) on Tako whether he had ever been disenchanted with Ethereum Foundation or the crypto scene, or Ethereum community. He responded, “Of course.” However, one of his biggest concerns is that some people think that Ethereum should allow more gambling apps and memecoins on the blockchain. Instead, he was criticizing Solana, a competing blockchain, where gambling–related projects and memecoins have surged in popularity.
The fact that some people believe Ethereum to be “bad” based solely on the fact that Ethereum does not push for blockchain casinos is troubling, Buterin said. Calling this a “moral reversal”, he warned that if the community continued down this path he might not want to participate in Ethereum anymore.
Ethereum has been losing more and more developers and new projects to the Solana network and that concerns many of the network’s supporters. Many believe Ethereum should suit its purposes and accommodate more of what kind of applications, for example gambling. Buterin, however, doesn’t agree with this idea. Instead, he believes Ethereum should keep its core and work to build meaningful and useful applications.
However, Buterin said the conversations he had with Ethereum community members in person have reassured him. While many people favor liberal gambling policies in their arguments online, most Ethereum supporters he meets offline still embrace the original vision of blockchain tech. This is why he feels responsible for the community, he does not want to just walk away yet.
The change in comment from his comes at a time when the Ethereum Foundation makes its changes in how they manage its funds. The community recently expressed its approval of depositing a large amount of ETH into decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms to mine funding without selling its holdings.
But for now, Buterin is not abandoning Ethereum and wants the community to not be a follower of trends regarding gambling.
